HYDERABAD: Indian police on Monday seized Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik's passport while he was quizzed at the home of his fiancee, tennis player Sania Mirza, over claims he is already married.

Preparations for the sporting stars' cross-border wedding have been marred by allegations that Malik married an Indian woman Ayesha Siddiqui "by telephone" in 2002.

Sania and Shoaib's marriage plans have already generated huge public interest across Pakistan and India, two countries normally locked in fierce rivalry. Now Siddiqui's claims have created a scandal.

"It is a preliminary investigation. The Siddiqui family have lodged a complaint and police are verifying the facts," Andhra Pradesh state police chief R.R. Girish Kumar said. "His passport has been seized by police."

In an interview with an Indian newspaper on Sunday, Malik said he began a telephone relationship with Siddiqui in 2001 after she sent him photographs.

He and his family repeatedly attempted to meet Siddiqui as he wanted to marry her but she always refused, he said.

Malik admitted to the newspaper that in 2002 that he signed a "nikahnama" (wedding agreement) "thinking the girl I was marrying was the one in the photographs."

But "the girl who was accepting the proposal was someone else," he said, without giving further details.

In a bizarre twist, Malik claimed he had spent time with Ayesha Siddiqui's "elder sister" who told him that Ayesha would not meet him as she had put on weight. Malik said he now believes the "sister" was actually Ayesha herself.

Malik, 28, arrived on Saturday in Hyderabad, where he is scheduled to marry 23-year-old Mirza on April 15.

The couple -- who are both Muslim -- plan to live in Dubai after the ceremony.

But Siddiqui has threatened to sue Malik, a wealthy international sportsman, if he refuses to "formally divorce" her before marrying Mirza.

Siddiqui has circulated supposed copies of her nuptial agreement to media outlets in India and Pakistan and has appeared on television to denounce Malik as a cheat who dumped her because his teammates said she was fat.

Sania Mirza all set to visit Pakistan to meet Shoaib Malik, gets visa & got Married in April 2010

New Delhi, Mar 30(ANI): Tennis sensation Sania Mirza and her family got their Pakistan visa on Tuesday, and would be leaving for Pakistan shortly to meet former cricket captain Shoib Malik and his family. According to reports, Sania and her mother, Nasima Mirza, went to the Pakistan High Commission to get the formalities done and collect their visa.

“We have got our visa. We are happy. Now that we have got the visa, we will be traveling to Pakistan,” Nasima said. Sania Mirza is to marry Shoaib Malik and a formal wedding reception has been scheduled within a month.

After the marriage, the couple will be based in Dubai, where Shoaib is a resident. Sania will continue to play tennis once she recovers fully from the wrist injury that has marred her career in the recent past. Yestarday, Sania told mediapersons that her marriage will be the biggest day of her life.

Sania also hopes to be fully fit to represent India in the Commonwealth and Asian Games that are scheduled for later this year. (ANI)

A private television news channel (Geo News) in Pakistan reported Monday (29 march, 2010) that Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza are marrying but Indian tennis star’s family hasn’t confirmed or denied the news as yet.

Sania Mirza has recently broken her engagement with family friend Sohrab Mirza when rumours about her marriage were sky high.

Shoaib Malik is recently banned by PCB for one year due to his roo rude behaviour with all team mates in Australian Tour and he is involved in another scandal,

In 2008, an Indian girl named Ayesha claimed that Shoaib Malik had married with her, but Malik constantly denied the accusations.

This marriage scandal is a fraud as no nikah or rukhsati took place and the parents of Ayesha are dishonouring the religion, Malik’s brother in law had told a channel.

Ayehsa’s parents had invited the Pakistan cricket team at dinner in 2005, but they did not show the girl on the insistence of Inzamam-ul-Haq nor they arranged any meeting with her despite his efforts, said Zafar.
